Archery World Cup Stage 1

Porec, Croatia, May 4-8, 2010

Final Results

Lone silver medal for India at Porec

A 16-member Indian archery team and its coaching and support staff left for Porec, Croatia, for the first of the four World Cup Series with high hopes. Having begun the preparation for the XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010, the team found a tough field to test its preparedness.

The going indeed was rough for the Indians as only the men's recurve team managed to land a medal - a silver.

The three-member team of Mangal Singh Champia, Jayanta Talukdar and Tarundeep Rai went down to Italy in the final after having topped the ranking round as No. 1 team. India scored 218 as against Italy's 221 in the title round.

In a way it was a creditable show by the Indian threesome as all most all the top archery nations in the world were in fray in the championship excepting the world champion Korea.

The best part of the Indians' show was Champia occupying the top spot in the ranking round with 686 points. He and former world champion Michele Frangilli of Italy tied on the same score but Champia's more number of 10s gave him the pride of place.

Indian ladies' team finished a disappointing ninth but these were early days to a long season and the women's team can still hope to put up a better show.

The Indians display in the individual championship continued to be poor with only Rimil Buruily making it to the quarterfinals of the women's recurve section.

Generally the Indians are feared lot in the team championship. In the individual championship they are done in by lack of focus and appalling temperament. It is time a good psychologist is inducted as part of the support staff to boost the archers' who mostly come from low and middle class society.
