India clinches four gold, one silver, one bronze

Indian archery reigned supreme at the 11th South Asian Games archery competition in Dhaka. The four-day competition held at BKSP, Savar, about 40 k.m. from Dhaka, proved to be India's gold mine as the regional super power swept all the four gold medals on offer.

Tarundeep Rai of Services and Dola Banerjee of Railways emerged the individual champions. India won both the team gold medals. Laishram Bombayla Devi won a silver in women's individual recurve event and Jayanta Talukdar picked up the bronze medal in the men's event.

Archery as a sport was introduced at Colombo in 2006 where India won all the four gold and two silver medals.



Indian team for South Asian Games

Kolkata, Jan. 26: A ten-member Indian archery team has been named for the 11th South Asian Games which opens at Dhaka on January 29.

Archery was first introduced at the Colombo in 2006 where the Indian team had won all the four gold and silver medals.

A country cannot win a maximum of two medals in each of the four events, men's individual and team and women's individual and team.

The contingent:

Men: Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee (both Steel Plant),
Mangal Singh Champia (Railways) and Tarundeep Rai (Services).
Coach: Ravi Shankar.
Women: Rimil Biriuly, Deepika Kumari (both Steel Plant),
L. Bombayla Devi and Dola Banerjee (both Railways).
Coach: Purnima Mahato.
