ABOUT ARCHERY
Archery is a target sport that requires great powers of concentration and technique.
Using a bow and arrow, the aim is to shoot the target with points awarded for accuracy. It is a sport that requires a surprising amount of strength and stamina. Modern arrows can fly at more than 240 kph. Targets are marked with 10 concentric rings, which score from 1 to 10; the nearer the arrow to the middle, the greater the score.
The information in this page has been broadly broken up into the following topics:
Types of Competitions
In International Outdoor Archery Competition, RECURVE Division is played in Asian Games and Olympics Games which was introduced in 1920. COMPOUND Division competition is a part of World Championship, Asian Championship and all continental competitions apart from Recurve division. Compound Archery is prevalent in Europe and America and is now gaining popularity in Asia. The compound bow, with its system of pulleys, makes the string far easier to draw, while the traditional recurve designs makes it more difficult to aim accurately. The Modern Outdoor Target Round commonly known as FITA Round. In response to the interest of spectators and television, the FITA Round was extended further to Olympic Round and FITA Round in itself is called the Ranking round.
In India, we have following three types of competitions. In order to broad base Archery in India and to popularize it further, AAI introduced Indian round in 1993. The Indian Round consists of shooting with Bambioo/wooden bow and arrows.

At the 15th Asian Games, the archery competition takes place over four different distances, starting with the longest. Men shoot from 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m. Women shoot from 70m, 60m, 50m and 30m.
The target is 122cm wide for the two longer distances and 80cm for the shorter distances. In the qualification round, competitors shoot 36 arrows from each distance, a total of 144 arrows.
In the individual competitions, the top 64 go through to the Olympic round; in the team competitions, the top 16 teams go through. The Olympic round is a straight knockout with competitors seeded by the placings in the qualification round. So, number 1 plays number 64, number 2 plays number 63. And so on.
In the Olympic round, all arrows are shot from 70m at a 122cm target. The two finalists shoot for the gold and silver medals, with the bronze medal decided in a play-off match.
In the team event, teams of three archers shoot three arrows each over three ends. The total points scored by all 27 arrows decide the winner (Three arrows x three archers x three ends = 27 arrows). All three archers in a team must finish shooting before the prescribed time limit (currently 3 minutes). Archers may shoot in any sequence and may shoot one, two or three arrows each time they are on the shooting line.
