Performing brilliantly on the concluding day of the Guatemala-World Cup Stage-1, the Indian recurve men's team, which selected for the Tokyo-Olympic Games and the recurve women's team chosen for the Final Qualification Tournament (FQT) and Olympics, clinched the highest slot in the medal standing by winning three Gold and one Bronze Medals.
Golden Girl – Deepika Kumari showed tremendous feat in the entire event and won the third Gold Medal in World Cup events by beating Ms.Mackenzie Brown of USA in the shoot-off match (6-5). Before this, she eliminated contenders of Mexico (7-3), Germany (6-0), Mexico (6-5 shoot-off) and USA (6-0) in semi-final, quarter final, pre-quarterfinal and 1/16 matches respectively in a row. Two individual Gold medals were won by Deepika in 2nd World Cups- 2012 (China) and 3rd World Cup - 2018 (USA). Till date, she has collected 32 medals in World Cups & World Cup Finals including 8 Gold, 16 Silver and 8 Bronze.
Ace Archer - Atanu Das who was conferred with Arjuna Award recently defeated Mr.Daniel Castro of Spain in the finals by 6-4. To make his path clear for finals, he boldly crashed the challenges of Mexico (6-2) in Semi final, Canada (6-4) in Quarter final, country-mate (Pravin Jhadav 6-4) in pre-quarterfinal and El Salvador (6-4) in 1/16 match.
Indian Women Trio of all Jharkhand girls-Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari created history by defeating Mexican Trio of Ana Vazquez, Alejandra Valentina and Aida Roman in a very tough final match. Recurve Women Team got the top slot on the podium by 5-4. It is worth-mentioning that Deepika was part of all five Women Recurve Team Gold Medals which India won in World Cups in 2011 (Shanghai), 2013 (Colombia & Poland), 2014 (Poland ) and 2021 (Guatemala).
Recurve duo – Atanu Das & Ankita Bhakat showed commendable performance and won the Bronze Medal with a comfortable margin (6-2) against USA Team of Brady Elison (Two Silver and one Bronze medalist in Olympics and double World Champion) and Casey Kaufhold.
While applauding wholeheartedly the efforts and feats of Indian Archers especially Deepika Kumari, Atanu Dass, Ankita Bhakat and Kamolika Bari, Shri Arjun Munda, President, Archery Association of India and Union Tribal Affairs Minister said that "these achievements of Indian Archers have not only infused an energy and power into Archery camp but has also enlighten a fresh hope in other sports which are preparing for Tokyo-Olympics."
Shri Arjun Munda stated that "the incredible performance of Indian Archers has proved that if you have iron-will, then nobody can stop you to demonstrate the best and touch the sky in these odd conditions and testing times too."
“We are very proud of the way our Archers and their coaches have remained positive, mentally strong and continued to train themselves during these testing times.” he added.
He further mentioned that he has spoken to Ms.Purnima Mahato, Coach-cum-Team Manager, over phone and while congratulating and praising the team for incredible performance, I have asked them to keep their tempo up till the Olympic Games so that the women team could get the full team quota places in the Paris-World Cup Stage-3 and ultimately, India could win the first-ever Olympic Medal.
Team will be reaching India in the mid night of 29th April, 2021.
